Art Exploring Social Implications of Genetic technologies

YOUgenics is a series of events that began with an exhibition in Portland, OR in April, 2002 at the Orlo Exhibition Space. In October 2003, the exhibition is re-staged at Southwest Missouri State University to engage the student and larger publics of Springfield, MO in a critical discussion about the current direction(s) of new biotechnologies. While joining a large number of recent exhibitions to take on the topic of genetic tech (Paradise Now, Gene(sis), etc...), YOUgenics receives no direct support from the industry and makes a conscious effort to avoid the (utopian or phantasmagoric) spectacularization of the technology as imagined through the images of the microscopic. Instead, the exhibit focuses on the social impacts these technologies represent, attempting to open up the complex relationships emerging between the ideology/technology of genetics and our daily lives.
V.02 features exhibited works, a panel discussion, a performance by subRosa and online works such as Action-Tank's MetaPet, Critical Art Ensemble's work with Beatriz da Costa and Claire Pentecost "Contestational Biology" and Ryan Griffis' "Postcard from Eutopia."
Information about the events, works and artists are available, as well as a list of linked resources on genetics and art.
